Trip Recap City #3: Santander

Beaches of Santander

The next morning we left Oviedo and drifted along with the fog back through the mountains and over to Cantabria.  But before we left Asturias entirely, I convinced Craig to stop in the small sea-village, Llanes.

It's not a Spanish road-trip without the bull.

After driving for only an hour and a half, we arrived to Santander.  We walked around the city center, and I'll have to admit that I wasn't that impressed.  The actual center was nice, but it was mainly composed of corporate businesses, which were closed due to Palm Sunday.  We saw the Banco de Santander, observed an Easter procession, and then made our way to the port.  Because there wasn't much to see in the city that day, we started walking along the coast to a park, La Peninsula de la Magdalena

The change of scenery was certainly work the 45-minute walk.  After passing through some run down parts of the port, we finally reached long a wooden pathway down long beaches with ornate summer homes on the hillside overlooking the coast.  We were both glad that we had decided to leave the city and explore the beaches it had to offer because it was a much more pleasurable way to spend the afternoon.

My advice to a guiri:  If you plan on visiting Santander, stay outside of the city in a nice beach town.  You can visit the city in an afternoon.  The playa is what's worth your time.
